Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang sent the email below to all Yahoo’ers at 2:20 pm PST, after earnings were announced. Besides being all lowercase, as usual, he lets everyone know that the company will be letting 10% of employees go to help save $400 million in annual costs. Jerry Yang, of course, will not be among the layoffs.

Report: Social Web Usage Tipped in 2008

A new report by Josh Bernoff of Forrester Research states that usage of social technologies increased markedly in 2008: three in four US online adults now use social tools to connect with each, up from 56% in 2007. I had a phone call late last week with a semantic startup called Siri that was spun out of SRI International (the birthplace of the computer mouse and the LCD screen, among many other important technologies). Most startups are willing to talk about their products “off the record” but this one wouldn’t divulge much beyond the fact that they’ve raised $8.5 million in Series A funding from Menlo Ventures and Morganthaler.
